This is the 10th month of the year, which means its the month of Halloween. When it comes to Halloween it is the day of dark things such as the dead rising which is why pumpkins are lit and standing on our porches. It is also the day James and Lilly Potter died in 1981. But more and moreover the years, Halloween became a Holliday of a single day to a whole month of watching horror movies for 31 days. But one should surely think that it is also a month special for Dark Wizards and Dark Arts. There are a lot of Dark Magic in the world and it is not only limited to castings but also animals and objects. The darkest of objects can be found in Knockturn Alley where lies an assortment of dark things and places such as Borkin and Burkes. In that store, there is a Hand of Glory and the Vanishing Cabinet. There are also plants. Even wands, with its core, can be seen as dark wands. Over the years witches and wizards see something and determine if its dark or light. Light Art is any magic that is pure, or animals, or objects. But what determines an object of magic as dark or light? What defines Dark Art as Dark Arts?
There are three known "Unforgivable Curses" that are seen as Dark Arts. They are the Cruciatus Curse that torments the victim, the Imperious Curse that controls the mind of one becoming a victim, and the last and most unforgiving is the Avada Kedavra Curse which instantly Kills the person and therefore a victim of a crime. The Opposite of that curse could be Expelliarmus as a counter-meaning to a kill by Expelling the person away or push away.
Others include Inferi, which brings the dead back as slaves, or Necromancy. Horcrux, which is to divide the soul. The Dark Mark is another or Morsemordre. Bringing the dead as slaves is automatically seen as bad news, they are puppets made to do what eh Dark Wizard wants them to do. To divide a soul is to kill themselves, which is similar to suicide. These are dark arts through and through and are DARK because of the Human self. It is Dark because it eliminates the Human Experience and takes advantage or manipulates human possibilities. In other words, Eliminates FREE WILL.
Dark Arts are not limited to curses, there are Hexes and Jinx. There are potions such as the Regeneration Potion and Drink of Despair, which causes one to see horrible things. Now, this is where it gets shady. What defines animals, objects, and plants to be dark?
Horcruxes are dark objects do to the soul in the place. But what about the Hand of Glory? It's used as a candle that only lits for the one who is holding it and is used to catch thieves. This is a Dark Object. But why? The Hand is a Human Hand, therefore seeing as Dark. It is Severed from a Victim. This I can see why it is a Dark Art but it seem quite normal, nothing extra defining.
Animals are light or dark. Acromantulas has a taste for people. Wizardkind are strongly told to be away from the colony of spiders. There are also Boggarts where the true form is unknown. Grindylows are sea creatures that strangle the prey. Let's take these three animals. Animals are survivors, What they do is part of there a natural way of it regardless of the damage they ensure. So for a spider to be dark is not accurate. Boggarts are things of unknown because its form is unknown we fear it, therefore it's dark. Grindylows are also animals that rely on a defense mechanism of survival. It strangles. When something looks violent, it is then seen as horrible and dark. It is very much dark in our eyes and understanding but it is also a living arrangement.
Dementors who were once human that feeds on happiness. The Banshee where it screams so loudly it's fatal. Hags eat children. Dementors are leeches that eat our soul, therefore dark. Banshees, however, are screamers like Mandrakes which can also be fatal. Hags eat children, but they also use tame dark magic. One using dark arts is seen as a dark person. These can be exceptions to why they are of the category of Dark Arts because they are life-threatening.
Obscurials are of immense power and need to be handled because of the destruction it can cause and it could reveal the wizarding society. It is labeled as Dark Arts but it can not be helped if the witch or wizard has it. IT cant be controlled and it is created because they can't use their magic. In this case, to call it as such is due to fear. The Ministry outlines how dangerous an animal is based on the things they do or capable of, mostly if it harms wizardkind. Sounds selfish, especially when they are trying to protect their family. The harm it gives the wizardkind automatically makes them Dark. Werewolves for instance. They rarely turn into an animal but they are dealing with a disease but seen as wild beasts. Dark Arts they become. Lupin himself was a victim of this disease but in turn, is seen as an enemy.
Now not all animals that are having a large threat meter are given that high of one because of danger. They are given a higher meter to protect that species. Is that not an issue? If one sees a Thunderbird with higher threat detection, which is given to protect it, some would kill it then because it can harm more people.
What defines Dark and light is by its nature and by what others say they are capable of. Stories determine the darkness of an object or the darkness of an animal. Wizardkind are seen as above the natural world, especially in America. They are told not to pursue a beast do to protecting each other in their own society thou.
Are Plants Dark or light? If a Basilisk is dark then what about eh Snakewood Tree behind Ilvermorny? Surely there is some effect on it? Isolt was going to cut it down but didn't do it to the medicinal properties. So if this is the case then what about the other dark things that could also be used to help others?
Hagrid went to Knockturn to buy Flesh-Eating Slug Repellent because his garden was being destroyed by them. But why is something as a fly repellent that can be bought at Home Depot at a place where dark arts are? Well, an easy answer is that it harms animals but it also keeps away animals from destroying things needed to survive. When Isolt saw a tree, she automatically took it as Dark, but if some dark things can also be used to help others like the Hand of Glory then it would not be a Dark Art.
I think it is what stories people come up with that says what is evil and people, out of uncertainty and fear, decided it is in order to sleep more knowing they are safe knowing. It is also the need to survive as a human species that determines that the nature of some things is bad or good if they feel life threatened. If it is life-threatening to wizardkind, it is a DARK ART, regardless of its (other) attributes to nature.
That article lists strange creatures where they are also dark ones:
Hinkypunks are gaseous creatures that light the path of a wizard with a lamp. These creatures are taught in Defense Against the Dark Arts. But they lure you to a path in order for you to get lost.
As far as leading one to get lost, Pukwudgies tends to lead people to a cliff and push them down.
Hidebehinds are shapeshifters that devour a witch and wizard when unseen behind trees.
Snallygasters have razor-sharp (steel) teeth.
dark, Dark, DArk, DARk, and DARK.
DARK ARTS.
