Residing Dementors: A Theoretical Origin

Writer: John BrewsterJohn Brewster

Dementors are Hooded figures that appear in Harry's story starting from his third year. They appear hooded, yet has hands that are very skeletal in appearance and does not appear to have a mouth. It is, for the most part, a humanoid figure that seems to hover above the ground and feeds on one's happiness as resource for food. This leaves the young witch or wizard in a state of emptiness as if he or she has no soul, due to only having dark memories and feelings left within oneself. The being is not a beast, thou in one sense it is a monster, but it is not poltergeist nor is it a specter. Theoretically, they were once human before becoming, leeches to humans and hiding in darkness on the walls of Azkaban Tower. J.K. Rowling claims she came up with the species as a metaphor for depression. This sounds like even in the world, the community could imagine them when feeling despair similar to the idea of having strong imagination to emit magic from within. (The idea of imagination being accepted is often mentioned in the books, notably by Vernon Dursely who does not accept it yet hints that he might in regards to his sister being magical). But I think it is not a Rowling-created creature in her world but another existing lore in the world on the other side of her native world. Like all beasts that derive from actual mythology, Dementors are in fact based on something in North America within some of the Native American mythologies. Dementors are based on the Choctaw shadow being called Impula Shilup.

In Choctaw mythology, there lies a shadowy figure called Impula Shilup also known as Nalusa Chito; a soul-eater. According to Wikipedia "If individuals allowed evil thoughts or depression to enter their minds, Impa Shilup would creep inside them and eat their souls (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Choctaw_mythology) Sounds right on point with Dementors. It also explains the Dementors presence in a realistic sense. Harry, on board of the Hogwarts Express, was dealing with depression regarding his mom, therefore allowing the Dementors to easily feed on him.

Like Dementors, they appear human, a man, thou with pointy ears. Another detail is that there are 2 sides, inside shadow and outside. "The shilombish (outside shadow) was supposed to remain upon the earth, and wander restlessly about its former home, often moaning, to frighten its surviving friends. It tried to make them forsake the spot, and seek another place to live." Sounds familiar?

"Those who entered to investigate refused afterwards to talk of what they had found inside, but the least frightening part of it was that the place was infested with Dementors. - Others were afraid of what might happen to the Dementors infesting the building if they deprived them of their home". To use the Wikia's part "friends" can be visitors that are not Dementors, in this case, a human wizard, and "tried to make them forsake the spot, and seek, another place to live" could be referencing in synch to using the place as a prison and making agreements to use them as guards for souls. An Inversion.

The Impula also stalks kids of young age (Harry being 13).

Other things are that it takes the form of animals, connected to Whisps (Irish lore in America).

Dementors also Breed and emits mist around them. Myst is what surrounds the American school, Ilvermorny, when No-Majes sees the area akin to Ruin with Hogwarts. Does this mean Dementors resides in the area? Myst was created to hide the location but from a view, it could be Impala's- the American relatives. "Over time, it became a castle with dormitories, teachers and other staff, hidden at the top of Mount Greylock by swirling mists and multiple enchantments." (https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/everything-you-need-to-know-about-ilvermorny). The thing is thou, the article nor the short story explains how the mist came to be, just simply that non-wizards will see the mist. Another thing is "When a person dies, the shilombish leaves the body and may haunt the earth as a ghost" but "The shilop remains on earth for a few days". (https://www.choctawnation.com/sites/default/files/2015/10/14/2009.12_Spiritual_beliefs_and_rituals.pdf). If that is the case then Dementors were indeed human and is a GHOST.

A GHOST THAT ORIGINATED FROM AMERICAN LAND.

Azkaban is based on Alcatraz and "Abaddon" ("place of destruction" or hell, in fact Abaddon in Russia is the demon himself.
