Unknown Patronus: A Stampede of Possibilities

Updated: Nov 26, 2020

One already knows this detail, if you don't: A Patronus charm is a defensive spell against the darkness that strives to attack all, but it is more then a defensive shield as it has a twin. The spell, Expecto Patronum is also a guide for the user that is commonly used to message other like-worlded inhabitants of a family or a job. It has an animalistic form. The caster of this spell has to have a powerful good memory to perform it as it is a difficult spell to perform, not all witches and wizards can cast it, like Hagrid. While the spell is in need of a happy/positive memory, there are still other elements of necessity to enquire when it comes to the identification of itself. Here are the following things to note about the incorporeal form or animal:

1) The form of animal it can become can range from any Muggle/Non-Magique/No-Maj/Cant-Spells animals such as the common canine to the very rare magical beasts of the wizarding world. However, the magical beast requires a lot of energy and the anatomy of such is to complex for it to understand which is why

2) it mostly conjures up a muggle based animal-like Ron's Retriever or Luna's Rabbit.

3) A Patronus is not far from an Animgus form. The fact that it is rare for it to be different from it reflects the design of the reason number 2 and the forthcoming 4th reason. It is very rare for it to take the form of a magical-society connected species. Newt himself, who can use it thou we have not seen it, could be magical like a dragon or the theorized Kelpie.

People have grown used to the idea of the world from a British perspective that it adds to anyone regardless of where one actually is. Perhaps the most important factor is that 4) The animal that it takes the form of is always native to the caster's birth/grown of the region. This is a theory, however, I am sure it was mentioned before by Rowling. Otherwise, its a theory of my own. The Animagus is a regional-based form and the Patronus is the Animgus form, therefore a Patronus is a regional-based animal.

Note: I will not go give WHAT his Patronus is, even as a theory as it is inconclusive. I will, however, outline possible results based on my understanding of Newt's life and other perceptive views of scenarios that are known so far in his life.

What is known about Newt Scamander?

Newt was born 1897 to a mother who bred Hippogriffs. He was a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry where he was sorted into Hufflepuff House. Newt worked as an employee in the Ministry of Magic in the Beast Division and in 1947, was the reason for the Werewolf Registration Act in 1947 (werewolves did not show up and sign so it became a failure). Newt was also the reason for the passing of the Thunderbird Protection Act in 1927 by the Magical Congress of the United States of America, then president, Seraphina Picquery. Awarded the Order of Merlin, Second Class in his study on magical beasts and currently residing in his home with American witch, Porpentina in Dorset. (FB7WTFT, 2017 edition; PP. 87-89: 'About the Author) What is not known is where exactly he was born other than somewhere in Europe.

I can only provide a thought into where I think he was born off the top of my head and that is Wales. If this random assumption is to be true, then it will be the fourth possible animal of his Incorporeal form.

To make due to what his animal is, I will be using the "documents" or films and Newt's Book. But the first possible clue is in his book, "His interest in fabulous beasts was encouraged by his mother, who was an enthusiastic breeder of fancy Hippogriffs".

The Case of the Hippogriff and Birthplace

His mother's name is currently unknown and I can only assume she was a rancher or on a ranch-like environment big enough to nurture and breed all kinds of animals, or specifically a Ranch of Hippogriffs. Hippogriffs would be a clue to his birth location. According to "Fantastic Beasts" book, it is "native to Europe". Generally, the Hippogriff is of Greek origin and an offspring of a Mare (or horse) and a Griffen. Furthermore, it's actual mythical origin seems to originate from France, near Ceret {https://cryptidz.fandom.com/wiki/Hippogriff (Google search page as France)}. Prior to the events of the first movie, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Newt visited all over the world before landing in America. One such place then means that he visited Paris, a city he would revisit in its sequel. This suggests France is a possible birth location but, it would be realistic if his mother just transported them over from France to Scamander household.

The Case of a Bigger Animal

The movies, or "documents" does shed some light on other possibilities. It is important to also know that, regarding Newt's Patronus, the writer and author J.K. Rowling said on Twitter that it was a BIG SPOILER to know. This means it has to be something that ties into the story of the current franchise. There are at least two possible "spoiler" moments in what was given so far and both can be seen in "The Crimes of Grindelwald". One piece of information in question is in the cemetery scene with the fight between Grindelwald and the heroes like Newt and his brother Theseus. The Protego Diabolica spell that was cast from the Elder Wand, or rather after he cast the incantation, a dragon took form from the fire itself. The assumption that it is Fiendfyre or at least similar to it, could also be the Protego Diabolica itself. This reveal is important if Newt is to fight him later ina future entry. This could be also Grindelwald's Patronus-like entity and if so, then his incorporeal form is something of a demonic dragon. It is known that dark wizards can perform Patronus charm i.e. Umbridge. Now, one does not need, I should think, a bigger animal to fight a big one. Like a mouse to an elephant. But as far as dragons go, Newt did mention he worked with dragons in World War 1:

Newt Scamander: You fought in the war?

Jacob Kowalski: Of course I fought in the war. Everyone fought in the war. You didn’t fight in the war?

Newt Scamander: I worked mostly with dragons. Ukrainian Ironbellies. Eastern Front.

The inclusion of the Ukrainian Dragon can't be dismissed, especially in the rule of film storytelling. Every scene is shown and every word spoken is important to the point of indicating something unlike a book with random daily moments that is the result of the need to build a world. He could have just said he fought in the war, but as the structure is important, especially the rule of three, Newt first indicates that he was a soldier, then an indication of his role, and finally, the specific job description that he is to do and that is the Ukrainian Ironbelly. It is also important to note that the Eastern Front is Eastern Europe and where Grindelwald has ties to.

Youtuber's SuperCarlinBrothers had a video believing the script-book cover of the second film has the clue to his Patronus or, at least, an involvement. The clue that the cover seems to show is a dragon. The idea that Newt has Dragon Patronus against Grindelwald's Demonic Dragon is an option of what could unravel. But Bigger is not necessarily better. Even, the Brothers suggest it could be a Pokepine, which leads to my next possible incorporeal form.

Newt Scamander and the Arizonac Bird

Newt had a mission and for some time the audience did not know it till Newt and Jacob Kowalski went into the evergoing distance of Newt's suitcase. From the oddly fused species of animal and plant of the Sweeping Evil to the size-shifting bird of the Occamy. The audience is introduced to what was his mission and reason for his visit to the Americas, Frank the Thunderbird.

The Thunderbird is of American species that are "sensitive to supernatural danger that wands created with its feathers have been known to fire curses preemptively". (FBAWTFT, 2017; Page 79). It can also create storms when flying (which in the end, it flew across New York to spread a rain of memory inducing charms given by Newt himself). The reason why this bird is important is to do to the ties to Tina Goldstein. As a symbolism of a new relationship, Frank left and yet Newt still has one Thunderbird beside him, one who he will marry. A strong moment of relationship that shows a bonding and connection one particular animal that he can bond more then what he could do an animal and proof that some humans are not a threat (other than Jacob Kowalski). Relationships are a huge factor in what defines an animalistic form for someone like Tonks and Lupin or Severus Snape and Lilly Potter because one animal will take the form of that person's incorporeal form. Tina's Patronus is unknown as much as her sisters. But his Patronus being a thunderbird is a big possibility due to his love for Tina. Fun Fact: A Thunderbird is related to a Pheonix, thou distantly. So this shows a connection to Albus Dumbledore in another light.

Another romantic interest is Leta Lestrange, but she is a past love with secrets. Her family animal is a Corvus, a small bird.

A Number of Small Connections

There are smaller notions of other clues and possibilities like the merchandise that depicts Newt with a Kelpie and, the thought of Wales in Great Britain. The Common Welsh Green dragon is native to that location and is the home to several worldwide beasts such as the Augurey, Thestral, Kelpie, Niffler, Jarvey, and a lot more. Kelpie as in merchandise, Nifflers are the main beasts and in all scenes and associations of Newt, Thestrals are common to the Elders Wand which can be seen as a mere refrence. Perhaps the Jarvey is to go by. Newt Scamander was expelled from Hogwarts to do an attack between a beast and the students. That beast in question was the Jarvey; a ferret that can talk. Ther is also the Unicorn and the Hippogriff themselves.

A lot of possibilities regarding what his spirit animal is and it is because Newt Scamander is an animal person and this is what creates a theory that his Patronus is not just one animal but a multitude. One has to wonder, unlike most witches and wizards with the rule that it is easier to manifest a muggle looking animal, he is a powerful wizard. He most likely has the rare form of a magical beast that has to be the reason why the Patronus Quiz allows the user to have magical beast forms. The allowance of it connects to the new movies, and newt himself, if the quiz is to go by at all. It is by design. I can not give a conclusion to what his single form will be or is. Perhaps it is a stampede of forms.

Newt's Ongoing Transformation

let's say that is not possible and there really is ONE form that newt DEFINITELY has. I would say it is a Jarvey, but why would Newt's form be something that ties to harming so many people that he cared about? If it is a BIG SPOILER, it has to allude to the story in a HUGE WAY, making it connect to the fight against Grindelwald and ties to Albus. It is known a Pheonix is about rebirth and it even has healing properties. Thunderbird as wand core is prized by Transfiguration masters. Transfiguration is another way of saying transformation or rebirth. At the end of "crimes", Newt finally took a side in the war (an example of transformation). This is reason to believe his Incorpeal form is a Thunderbird which breaks the rule that the form is of native land to the user, making it an example as to why Newt Scamander is not like other witches and wizards. It is foreign. A Thunderbird against a Demonic Dragon. Thunderbirds are, really, a giant eagle, a giant Pterodactyl-sized Bald Eagle. Thunderbirds, as a house of Ilvermorny, is soul, spirit, what one is, and would reflect a Hufflepuff such as Newt who is who he is. Hippogriffs are part griffins which are offsprings of eagles. If then, the incorporeal form is grounded in the No-Maj world, it is a single species of Eagle.

The Ever-inconclusive Possible Conclusion

Newt's Patronus is an Eagle.

Post note: I still think it is a Jarvey.
