A Typical Gryffindor

Updated: Oct 17, 2019

Anyone can agree that the houses that Hogwarts has is the one element that anyone pays attention to and why is that? That is because..... well it depends on the person; the most common, which is also the most important, is the sense of identity. WHO AM I?

When I was younger, 2001, the first Harry Potter film was coming out and was out and the movie was fun. At the time, there were only 4 books out, a question is often asked is: How did you find out about Harry Potter? What got you into it?, and my answer to that question is that it could have been the books. I do remember that I went to a book store and lifted a copy of 'Chamber of Secrets', but I also remember borrowing it from the school library. I did own the first book, which is now with a torn cover and tape. I went to the midnight release parties of books 5-7, I bought 'Goblet of Fire' and lost it and bought it again in 2016 when I wanted to read it all in one go. I have books 1-4 on paperback and 5-7 on hardcover, and as a bonus I DO have Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (rehearsal edition) and it's a fun piece. But I did not personally become a fan of HP till 2016 because of CC, but mostly Fantastic Beasts and The Wizarding World of North America.

In 2001, I chose Gryffindor and some would say "Did you choose it because the others did have anything?", anyone knows that Gryffindors and Slytherins are the only house merchandise until Fantastic Beasts and Hufflepuff got the attention. No, in 2001, my mindset was that Gryffindors are heroes and Slytherins are bad guys, like others, although I also thought Ravenclaws were pirates. Jumping to 2011, the films were over and Pottermore was a thing and it was a virtual playground. I never participated and if I remember, I had problems getting an account. It was shut down and brought up years later and I took the quiz in 2016. In excitement, I ran to the computer and proceeded through the Hogwarts sorting quiz, I chose the answers and in the end, boom - Gryffindor. ... I did NOT take it well, 'how typical', Typical Gryffindors. To let the reader know, Christmas the year before, I got a Ravenclaw hat, but then I thought about it. 2001, that I chose to be a Gryffindor, that I was one since I was turning 10. The more I looked into it, the more I understood why it might be and why it is. The most important reason are the friends I hung out with growing up, and these friends were my siblings (all of us are Gryffindors). I would walk with my brother to the school bus in middle school, and walking to and from an elementary school. Friends are the most important theme in the series, who one chooses to be friends with determines the path. Ones sibling certainly can be a friend.

As far as traits: Brave - Bravery is being who I am despite the problems it might give to my family (parents). But also being brave is participating in class to questions I know the answer to. I am a knowledgeable person, but I do spread it out all the time. Brave is not always knowing when to pick a fight, it's not fighting, I don't fight but try to ignore it. I thought, initially, bravery is overcoming the fear of heights, which is the fear of falling, it is not that that kind of bravery that Gryffindor is about, it's the bravery of being who that person is themselves. Chivalry is being noble and there is a code to live by. Being noble allowing the other person to act first. The Vikings were noblemen, savage as they are, they are savage with honor. Nobility is a description giving by one person to describe another. I might not see why I would be noble unless I ask. Courage and Bravery are not the same, nearly maybe, to be brave is to act on something you would not normally act upon, and Courage is something within oneself. Do I have the will to confront something painful or dangerous? That can happen without a choice, there are always something that triggers an act upon something. Maybe it is a choice, but the willingness is strong. So maybe I am Courageous, just the situation is something that needs a different approach in action. Some of these definable examples are intact to Nerve and Daring.

But this year it's a different path.

Now, taking the newest AR sorting quiz on the Wizarding World App, my house changed....
